Introduction
The Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE) is a three-year professional programme designed for individuals seeking to build a career in secondary school teaching. The programme combines subject knowledge with professional teacher training, enabling trainees to develop the skills required to support effective teaching and learning.
The programme aims to:
- Provide trainees with a strong foundation in educational theory and practical teaching methods.

The programme incorporates theoretical learning, practical activities, continuous assessment, and professional teaching experience.
Course Requirements
- Candidates are required to select two teaching subjects alongside professional support subjects.
- The programme takes three years to complete.
- Students undertake Teaching Practice/Practical Teaching as part of their professional preparation.
- Successful completion of the required practical teaching component is a prerequisite for completion of the programme.
- Examinations are conducted externally by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants should meet the relevant minimum academic requirements, including:
- KCSE Mean Grade: C+ (Plus), or
- KCE Division II, or an equivalent qualification.
- The applicant should also meet the required grade in the two selected teaching subjects.
